The Adventures of Jessica and Zebedee

This week we read and discussed the book The Adventures of Jessica and Zebedee. In this story (written by Linda Joy) A young girl called Jessica lives in an orphanage that is run by a lady called Madam Iceberg. We discovered that Madam Iceberg was not a kind lady and that Jessica's room in the orphanage was referred to as an office.

Her life changes when she is gifted a parrot named Zebedee.We discover that Jessica is a really good artist and that this skill leads her into a new lifestyle away from the orphanage. They have many adventures together, some better than others. 

We gave this book a 5 out of 5 star rating and would recommend this book if you like adventure stories.

After finishing the book we drew our own pictures of Zebedee. We have added some of them to this blog.

Spiders and their Webs for Halloween

 On Friday we did art to help us use the maths skills that we have been learning. 

First we had to fold our paper to make a square.

Then we had to fold the paper in half (1/2) to make a rectangle.

Next we had to fold the paper in half again (which made quarters (1/4).

We then had to find the middle and draw a straight line using our ruler from the middle point to the bottom corner point.

After this we had to draw a parallel line on both the left and the right.

Finally we had to draw an even number of curved lines on either side of the parallel line.

we then coloured in the middle line and every other line, this helped to guide us when cutting.

After making the web we coloured in the different parts of our spider before cutting it out. We then glued our spider legs to the back of the body making sure that they were glued symmetrically (where I glued one leg, I had to glue the opposite leg in exactly the same place).

We had lots of fun making our web and spider. it was great that we could also take it home to share with our family.

Kindness Day

 This week we have been reading and learning about flowers. 

On Friday we chose to have a day of art and craft. We made a flower garden using vivid and crayons to do this we followed a youtube clip. We practised first on newsprint as we had not drawn with a vivid before. We were very pleased with the outcome and hope to do an activity like this again soon.

A tip from Room 6

If you need to find the middle of your paper without using a ruler or marking the paper with a pencil, fold your paper in half and then in half again to make quarters. Where the two lines cross is the centre of your paper.

We also made a four tier flower using watercolours.We had four different sized flowers to paint. We discovered how to make our paint colours lighter and darker with how much water we had on our paint brush. When the paint was dry we cut out our flowers and then folded the petals into the centre of the flower, this gave our flower a three dimensional effect. We were very happy with our flowers.

At the end of the day we took them home with us. We are going to give them to someone who has been kind to us.
