Matariki stars

This week we have been looking at Matariki, what it means and how it is celebrated. As part of our learning we had to make an 8 point Matariki star this is how we did it.

First we needed to get 8 squares of paper

Then we had to fold the paper in half, point to point to make a triangle

Next we had to open up the triangle and turn our square around to look like a diamond

We then folded the point of each side into the middle and fold, this made our square look like a kite

Finally we had to put our 8 points together to make a star

We then decided they would look even better if we added glitter. Here are our finished Matariki stars.

Jellyfish and Octopuses

Today I did buddy reading with a senior. Today I read an interesting book about Jellyfish and Octopuses. Octopus bodies was my favourite content to read. I learnt that octopuses have soft bodies. The images in the book looked really interesting. I also learnt that a large group of jellyfish are called a bloom or sometimes can be also called a swarm or a smack. Octopuses can swim fast, but only for short distances. Jellyfish can drift with the ocean tides. I learnt the meaning of harmful. Harmful means something that is dangerous. The blue-ringed octopus has a a very poisnuis bite.

Below it shows you my favourite images of the book.

Measuring our bodies

This week we have been learning how to measure. With a partner we had to draw around our body. After this we had to measure all around the drawing using our feet.

We got lots of different results!

so we came up with some rules for measuring:
Rule 1. Whatever we used had to be exactly the same, for example:
We couldn’t use pencils as they were different lengths because of being sharpened but we could use pens because they were all the same
Rule 2. Whatever we used had to touch but not overlap, we couldn’t have gaps
Rule 3. We needed to use the same starting point and end point.

We found out that even though we used different things to measure with we could still see who was the tallest and who was the shortest.
After measuring we found out that Nita was the tallest and Kane was the shortest.

Pictures of breathing under the ocean with Harold

In room 3 we have being looking at the human body and the function of the lungs and heart with Harold from Life Education. Here are some pictures of us swimming under the ocean and using tanks of oxygen to help us breathe. We found out that the fish and sharks don’t need these tanks because they have something called gills that helps them to breathe under the water.
